At the end of the 19th century a little Polish town, Otwock, became a popular summer holiday destination thanks to its unique microclimate and its proximity to Warsaw. As Varsovians started to build their summer houses there an unprecedented mix of architectural styles emerged incorporating the traditional elements of local wooden architecture, the Swiss style popular after the World Fair in Vienna of 1873, and traditional Russian ‘dacha’ houses. Out of this unique fusion of architectural styles came Swidermajer architecture.
